In this video, you are about to see the first well documented case in the history of hair transplantation in which leg hair is used to soften the hairline of the head. The patient in this video is an indexed case of body hair transplant (BHT). He has had multiple hair transplantations using older techniques, but the nature of these traditional techniques and the type of donor hair used left the hairline was very harsh looking before the patient underwent the UGraft procedure with Dr. Umar.

Hairlines created from traditional transplants tend to possess a harsh straight line appearance because the hair derived from traditional donor areas are typically thick even if they are single hairs. With the advent of using body hair transplant, however, hairlines can now be made softer and more natural looking. In 2006, Dr. Umar utilized his leg hairs and 1000 grafts in two years to refine and create a very natural and subtle hairline in this patient. At two to three months after the surgery, the patient stated that hair extraction marks on his legs were completely undetectable.

Up until this point, standard strip and FUE methods have been using single haired follicular unit grafts. These structures are harvested from the donor safe zones on the scalp. However,  the extreme thickness of these hairs contrasts very noticeably with the thinner hair which emerges from the hairline.  This is especially true in patients at the Norwood 1-2 levels who still have a significant portion of their native hairs in tact. Although this problem is not obvious to most casual onlookers, it can be quite striking to a more discerning observer.

The result of using thick hairs in the hairline ends up looking like an unusual wall of thick single haired follicles.  And this awkwardness can be worsened when there is a higher contrast between the color of the hair and the color of the scalp.

Hair transplant surgeons have tried to address this cosmetic issue through the following methods.

(1) In FUT (strip surgery), grafts are taken from the temporal region of the scalp

(2) In Follicular Unit Extraction, the grafts are removed from the peri-auricular (around the ears) regions and nape.
