Q. Is there a role for Botox for the restoration of hair?
At the moment, the use of botox for the restoration of hair is being investigated by research. One doctor reported on the hair growth effects of Botox when he was administering the drug for his mother’s migraine headaches. Another researcher is studying its effect on alopecia areata while yet another group of researchers in Canada created a more formal study to examine the effects of Botox on hair loss. Surprisingly, the use of the botulinum injections was found to decrease the rate of shedding. It is quite possible that Botox relaxes the muscles close to the scalp’s surface, expanding the width of the blood vessels. This allows the follicles to receive more oxygen which helps combat the degradation of testosterone to DHT. The use of Botox for the restoration of hair remains a possibility at this point, not an actual cure.
Topical Minoxidil (i.e. Rogaine) can be used to increase blood supply and oxygen to the scalp.
