What are the characteristics of pattern baldness?
Characteristics of Pattern Baldness are unique  in men and women.  In men, patterned hair loss emerges in distinct stages starting with hairline recession.  Typically, hair also starts to dissipate in in the crown.   When male pattern baldness reaches the most severe stages, hair is gone from the entire top of the head, leaving a rim around the lower back and sides of the scalp.

What are the characteristics of pattern baldness

As opposed to well defined stages, the characteristics of female pattern baldness by a global thinning of hair. This usually occurs over the entire head.

There are many pathways involved in pattern baldness. The main one involves a compound called DHT (dehydrotestosterone) which forms when testosterone breaks down due to the intervention of the enzyme, 5-alpha-reductase-II which comes from the oil glands in the hair follicle.  The genetics of those with pattern baldness will code for weaker protein receptors on the hair follicles which offer poor defense against this molecule. As a result, DHT will cause these tiny organs to shrink.  And they are no longer able to grow new hair.

Although this mechanism is central to men, it is usually confounded with other variables in women.  For example, hormonal shifts contribute to thinning and shedding to a far greater extent in women.
