Do DHT Blocking Shampoos work?
DHT (dehydrotestosterone) is a central cause of androgenic alopecia. It interacts with hair follicles causing them to shrink. And because it is commonly mentioned in articles and scientific literature about hair loss, the term has become somewhat of a buzzword used for marketing purposes on the labels of hair loss products. Using DHT blocking shampoos for hair restoration is based on the perspective that the compound accumulates around the hair pores. Therefore, the shampoo would help clear these openings to lower the amount of dehydrotestosterone that the hair follicles would be exposed to.

DHT Blocking Shampoos Research

There are no controlled research studies to directly support the use of DHT blocking shampoos for treating hair loss, but there are anecdotal indications. Dehydrotestosterone basically binds to receptors along the base of the hair follicle as opposed to the top opening.  This is how it limits the nutritional intake of these structures from the bloodstream causing them to shrink. Some DHT blocking activity has been attributed to ketoconazole  or Nizoral. This has formed the rationale for the use of Nizoral and ketoconazole shampoos by hair loss sufferer’s. There are no controlled studies to support or dispprove this approach. For this reason, such a usage is off label and should be done in consultation with a dermatologist. Ketoconazole shampoo in the background of dandruff would benefit hair health, hence hair growth.
