FUE is performed with tiny diameter punches which are applied directly to the scalp in order to harvest grafts of 1-4 hair follicles. With this approach, tiny round wounds remain. Once they heal, the scarring is very slight. And they are not nearly as noticeable compared to the excision results of strip surgery.
Choosing FUE hair restoration over strip hair surgery
In strip surgery, a scalpel is used to remove a long, elliptical section from the back or sides of the head. These are the regions of the head where it is safe to perform such excisions. Follicular unit grafts are then derived from this piece of scalp tissue. After the edges of the wound is closed, a long scar then results. Many patients feel concerned about others noticing this. So they grow out their hair to keep this hidden.
With Follicular Unit Extraction, patients are not constrained to a particular hair length. They can choose very short and conservative hair styles. Furthermore, the punches can be applied to any region of the head. Doctors are then able to choose different hair thicknesses to work with.
