Thinning from thyroid disorders
Thinning due to genetics is also characterized as androgenic alopecia. In other words, male pattern baldness does not always follow the same phases as what is seen on the classic illustrations of the Hamilton Norwood scale. There are two forms of genetic thinning in men:
- DPA (diffuse patterned alopecia)
- DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia)
If your thinning is inherited and you address the issue as soon as possible, drugs like Propecia and Rogaine can offer the most promise in terms of seeing the changes you want. More advanced manifestations may require hair transplantation with body follicles if there are not enough usable donor grafts on the head.
Tests can be performed to see if thyroid disorders are playing a role. Early attention and thyroid replacement treatment can prevent more advanced hair loss stages from developing which can be more difficult to reverse. Thyroid related hair loss or thinning can be addressed with prescription medications like Levothyroxine.
