Hair Miniaturization and Hair Loss
Hair Miniaturization and Hair Loss : Hair grows, on average, an inch every two months. Each hair grows between two and six years, then remains at that length before falling out. Then new hairs grow in its place. At any one time, about 85% percent of the hair on your head is in the growing phase and 15 percent is not. Each hair sits in a cavity called a follicle. Baldness in men happens because follicles shrink over time, causing the hair to grow finer and shorter. Hair miniaturization is part of the balding process when the thickness of one’s hair shaft shrinks, or becomes thinner and thinner over time. Miniaturization will eventually stunt the hair growth almost completely, before it falls out. It is the first sign and stage of hair loss in androgenetic alopecia.

Hair Miniaturization

Hair can be measured by examination under a special microscope, called a hair densitometer. Increased hair miniaturization in certain patterns, reflect a progression of hair loss. In addition, miniaturization and detectable hair loss is not evident to the naked eye until more than 50 percent of normal (non-miniaturized) hair is lost. Many men and women don’t talk to a doctor until significant miniaturization of the hair has already taken place.

Although there are a few causes for hair miniaturization, the most common causes are due to genetics, age, or androgens. Those who think they are balding should have your scalp hair mapped for miniaturization. This will estimate the pattern of hair loss allowing changes measured over time. These measurements are very fast and easy. It is almost nearly impossible to find miniaturized hairs on your own scalp. A dermatologist or hair restoration specialist would be better at spotting them as they are trained to do so and use hair magnification.
