The History of the FUE Hair Transplantation Procedure
The History of the FUE Hair Transplantation Procedure : Hair transplants are now widely recognized and performed all around the world. The modern hair transplants can be traced back to the 1930′s, where surgeons used small grafts to replace damaged areas of eyebrows or lashes. They did not attempt to treat baldness at that time. Their efforts did not receive widespread attention at the time and World War II kept scientific advances isolated for another 20 more years before hair transplants become more widely practiced and recognized.

The History of the FUE Hair Transplantation Procedure

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves moving skin that contains hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor area) to bald or balding parts (the recipient area). It is now mainly used to treat male pattern baldness, whereby grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to bald scalp. However, today it is also used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard hair, and now even to fix previous hair transplants using body hair transplantation. Hair transplants differ from skin grafting, in that grafts contain almost all of the epidermis and dermis that surrounds the hair follicle, and many tiny grafts are transplanted rather than a single strip of skin, as was done early on.

It is now known that hair naturally grows in follicles that contain groupings of one to four hairs. Currently, today’s most advanced techniques transplant the one to four hair “follicular units” in their natural groupings. Today, modern hair transplantation can achieve a very real and natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair with new procedures. This recent hair transplant procedure is called follicular unit transplant. The donor hair for a follicualr unit transplant can be derived either via follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or through a minimally invasive procedure called follicular unit extraction (FUE)

FUE hair harvesting of individual follicles of hair are removed under local anesthesia.  Because FUE is done using single follicles, no large amount of tissue is removed, there are no visible linear scars after surgery, and pain is typically minimal. Typically there is no need to return to the clinic after surgery as there are no stitches to remove.
