Does Platelet Rich Plasma Work For Restoring Hair
While this is not a treatment offered or supported by Dermhair Clinic, we feel it is important to provide individuals with information to consider for making informed hair restoration decisions.
Does Platelet Rich Plasma Work For Restoring Hair : What Is Platelet Rich Plasma?
When a patient’s own blood is removed (about 30 mL) and placed in a specialized centrifuge, different layers emerge.
(1) the red blood cells
(2) platelet deficient plasma
(3) platelet rich plasma
Platelets are components of the blood which are intended to help form clots. They produce various forms of growth factors which stimulate cell growth and division.
Injections of platelet rich plasma are used for areas like skin rejuvenation and healing injuries. But now this treatment modality is being misguidedly offered as hope for restoring hair.
Can Platelet Rich Plasma Restore Hair Growth?
At the moment, there is no research which supports the ability of PRP to revive dormant follicles or to facilitate their growth after a hair transplant operation.
In fact, scientists have not yet found a way to reverse the state of miniaturization in hair follicles. And while it may seem plausible to use growth factors to stimulate cellular reproduction, the phenomenon restoring the hair production processes has not been validated.
The Issue of Wound Formation and Healing
Some patients have indeed experienced hair growth after undergoing PRP. However, the results are insubstantial. Furthermore, it is not clear whether this occurs as a result of wounds which are inflicted on the skin prior to applying the Platelet Rich Plasma.
Researchers have found that follicles are produced as part of the skin’s natural healing processes. So any growth which emerges may be due to the wounding of the skin as opposed to the PRP.
Does Platelet Rich Plasma Work For Restoring Hair After Hair Transplant Surgery ?
The growth of hair following an operation will depend entirely on the surgeons’ skills. This involves:
(1) The ability to select healthy follicles as opposed to structures that have already started to shrink
(2) Best practices in the proper handling of the grafts. This means avoiding mechanical trauma from instruments, air drying and cool storage conditions
If the wrong follicles were selected, or if the grafts suffered injury, PRP would not be able to reverse the effects of these mistakes.
Hair Restoration Evidence
Individuals who are considering any form of treatment would need to look for evidence of convincing results. This would naturally include before and after photos which depict a significant increase in the amount of hair. So far, images of PRP results do not illustrate this.
