Do Prostaglandins grow hair ?
There are some prostaglandins which actually cause hair loss to worsen. An example would be PGD2. Studies show that the scalps of those with male pattern baldness have very high levels of this prostaglandin. Some people found this result to a hopeful sign that a new and effective hair loss treatment is soon on its way.
However, there are other prostaglandins which promote hair growth (e.g. PGE2 and PGF2a)
Bimatoprost (i.e. Latisse) and Latanoprost are PGF2a analogs. Both of them have shown the ability to grow eyelash hairs. And now researchers are looking into their potential to help reverse baldness and thinning.
Pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) is truly a very complex condition with many different pathways which typically involve: multiple genes, testosterone, DHT, androgen protein receptors on the hair follicles and prostaglandins. So in answering the question: Do Prostaglandins grow hair? The answer is yes for some and no for others.
