The Pros of Propecia
Propecia, a finasteride, is used to treat androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. While male pattern baldness is mortifying for those who suffer it, it is a common condition in which the hair on the scalp begins to thin. This hair loss eventually leads to a balding crown and/or receding hairline.
HOW DOES PROPECIA HELP?
Propecia prevents hair loss by stopping testosterone from converting into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inside the body. The catalyst for baldness is ultimately hormonal—it is the interaction of DHT with vulnerable hair follicles. This interaction renders the follicles unable to formulate healthy hair, thus the hair becomes brittle, weak, and falls out. The hair loss in these affected areas leads, in turn, to baldness.
Propecia reduces the amount of DHT existing in the scalp area, which slows and even reverses the hair loss process in some cases. Propecia is taken orally, once per day in 1 mg doses. Propecia is proven to work best in cases where hair loss is discovered early on, and baldness is not severe. Studies show that 80% of men who take Propecia stop experiencing hair loss and even regain their hair to some degree; usually within two years of use.
While Propecia shows no result on the restoration of transplanted hair, it helps maintain healthy growth of the surrounding follicles. According to Dr. Umar, Propecia should be used with care and under the advice of a physician when undergoing body hair transplantation.
